Problem

A flexible string of linear mass density μ\mu is kept under a steady tension TT. Transverse waves travel along the string with speed vv. (i) Write the dimensional formulas of vv, TT and μ\mu. (ii) Obtain an expression for vv in terms of TT and μ\mu, leaving your answer up to a dimensionless constant kk. (iii) From the expression found in part (ii), state quantitatively how the wave speed changes (a) if the tension is quadrupled, while μ\mu remains unchanged, (b) if the linear mass density is made four times, while TT remains unchanged.
