Problem

A ball of mass 2 kg2\,\text{kg} moving along a smooth horizontal track with speed 10 m s−110\,\text{m\,s}^{-1} collides head-on with a stationary block of mass 3 kg3\,\text{kg}. Immediately after impact, the ball and the block stick together and move as a single body. (i) Calculate their common velocity just after the collision. (ii) Find the total kinetic energy of the system before the collision. (iii) Determine the total kinetic energy of the system after the collision. (iv) Compute the fractional loss of kinetic energy ΔKKinitial\dfrac{\Delta K}{K_{\text{initial}}}. (v) Express the loss as a percentage of the initial kinetic energy and state into which form(s) this missing energy is likely to have been converted.
