Problem

Two independent research teams analyzed separate samples of the same pure carbon–sulfur compound. • Team A started with a 1.000 g sample and, after appropriate chemical treatment, isolated 0.384 g of elemental sulfur. • Team B started with a 2.500 g sample and isolated 0.960 g of elemental sulfur. Atomic masses (g mol⁻¹): C = 12.01, S = 32.07. (a) Calculate the mass percent of sulfur in the compound as determined by each team. Show all work and include units. (b) Using your results from part (a), determine whether the two data sets are consistent with the Law of Definite Proportions for a pure substance. Provide numerical justification. (c) Explain, in terms of the composition of matter at the particulate level, why your conclusion in part (b) does or does not support the claim that both samples are the same compound.
