Problem

Two identical smooth spheres, each of mass 0.40 kg0.40\,\text{kg}, collide on a frictionless horizontal surface. Sphere PP moves with speed 3.0 m s−13.0\,\text{m\,s}^{-1} towards stationary sphere QQ in a head-on collision. (i) Find the loss of kinetic energy if the coefficient of restitution is 00. (ii) Find the loss of kinetic energy if the coefficient of restitution is 0.60.6. (iii) Determine the ratio ΔKe=0.6ΔKe=0\dfrac{\Delta K_{e=0.6}}{\Delta K_{e=0}}.
