Problem

A 0.20 kg0.20\,\text{kg} cricket ball travelling at 20 m s−120\,\text{m}\,\text{s}^{-1} towards a fielder is caught and brought to rest uniformly in the fielder’s hands in 0.050 s0.050\,\text{s}. (i) Compute the impulse experienced by the ball while being caught. (ii) Find the average force exerted on the ball by the fielder during the catch. State its direction relative to the ball’s initial motion. (iii) The fielder can safely withstand a maximum average force of 80 N80\,\text{N}. Calculate the minimum time over which he must bring the ball to rest so that the average force does not exceed this limit. (iv) Explain briefly why professional fielders are advised to pull their hands backwards while catching a fast ball.
