Problem
A ball is thrown vertically upward into the air. Neglect air resistance throughout the motion.
(a) Write the mathematical expressions for the kinetic energy and the gravitational potential energy of the ball when it is at a height h above the ground and moving with speed v.
(b) As the ball rises from the point of projection to its highest point, describe qualitatively how its kinetic energy and potential energy change.
(c) Give a reason why the sum of the kinetic energy and potential energy of the ball remains constant during the entire flight, provided no external non-conservative forces act on it.
