Problem

The barrel of a frictionless syringe contains a sample of gas that can expand freely so that the pressure on the gas remains equal to the external atmospheric pressure. Initially the gas occupies 60 cm360\,\text{cm}^3 at 27∘C27^{\circ}\text{C}. The temperature is first lowered to 0∘C0^{\circ}\text{C} and then raised to 100∘C100^{\circ}\text{C}, all changes taking place at constant pressure. (i) Determine the volume of the gas after the cooling to 0∘C0^{\circ}\text{C}. (ii) Determine the volume after the subsequent heating to 100∘C100^{\circ}\text{C}. (iii) Calculate the ratio of the final volume to the initial volume.
