Problem

A block of mass 0.50 kg0.50\,\text{kg} is attached to a spring and performs simple harmonic motion along a horizontal frictionless surface. The spring constant is 200 N m−1200\,\text{N\,m}^{-1} and the amplitude of oscillation is 0.20 m0.20\,\text{m}. At a certain instant, the potential energy of the system is 90%90\% of the total mechanical energy. (i) Calculate the magnitude of the displacement of the block at this instant. (ii) Determine the kinetic energy and the speed of the block at the same instant. (iii) If the time period of oscillation is 0.314 s0.314\,\text{s}, find the magnitude of the acceleration of the block at the instant considered in part (i).
