Problem
A car has an outside rear-view mirror that is part of a sphere of radius 1.2m. While driving on a straight road, a truck is travelling behind the car at a distance of 6.0m from the mirror.
(i) Calculate the focal length of this mirror.
(ii) Determine the position and nature of the image of the truck with respect to the mirror.
(iii) The car’s owner thinks of replacing the curved mirror by a plane mirror of the same size so that the truck appears larger. Using two separate arguments based on image properties, evaluate whether this replacement would be advisable.
