Problem

During a crash test two identical cars, A and B, of mass 1.2×103 kg1.2 \times 10^3\,\text{kg} each strike a rigid wall and come to rest from 25 m/s25\,\text{m/s}. Car A has a crumple zone that brings the passenger cabin to rest in 120 ms120\,\text{ms}, whereas Car B (without a crumple zone) stops the cabin in 30 ms30\,\text{ms}. For force estimates take the effective mass of the occupant as 70 kg70\,\text{kg}. (a) Calculate the average force experienced by the occupant in Car B. (b) Find the ratio of the average forces on the occupant in Car B to Car A and state which design offers better safety.
