Problem

A 1.0 kg1.0\,\text{kg} sample of 92235U^{235}_{92}\text U undergoes complete fission. Assume that each fission releases 200 MeV200\,\text{MeV} of energy. Given: • Avogadro number NA=6.02×1023 mol−1N_A = 6.02 \times 10^{23}\,\text{mol}^{-1} • Atomic mass of 92235U=235 g mol−1^{235}_{92}\text U = 235\,\text{g\,mol}^{-1} • 1 eV=1.6×10−19 J1\,\text{eV} = 1.6 \times 10^{-19}\,\text J • Speed of light c=3.0×108 m s−1c = 3.0 \times 10^{8}\,\text{m\,s}^{-1} (i) Calculate the total energy released. (ii) Determine the corresponding loss of mass. (iii) Express this mass loss as a percentage of the original 1.0 kg1.0\,\text{kg} mass.
