Problem

A research vessel uses a SONAR device to determine the depth of the ocean floor. The device emits an ultrasonic pulse straight downward and detects the reflected signal after a time delay of 1.2 s1.2\,\text{s}. The speed of these waves in seawater is 1500 m s−11500\,\text{m s}^{-1}. Answer the following. (a) Calculate the depth of the sea at that point. (b) The ship then lowers the transmitter–receiver pair to a depth equal to half of the value obtained in part (a) and repeats the measurement. Find the new time interval between the emission and reception of the reflected pulse.
