Problem

A wooden block of mass 5 kg5\,\text{kg} is sliding on a smooth horizontal surface. Initially its speed is 2 m s−12\,\text{m\,s}^{-1}. A constant horizontal force acts on it for 3 s3\,\text{s} and increases its speed to 8 m s−18\,\text{m\,s}^{-1}. (i) Calculate the initial and final momentum of the block. (ii) Determine the change in momentum of the block during the 3 s3\,\text{s} interval. (iii) Does the inertia of the block change in this process? Give a reason for your answer. (iv) Find the magnitude of the acceleration produced and hence calculate the magnitude of the force acting on the block.
