Problem

A straight tube of length 0.85 m0.85\,\text{m} is open at one end and closed at the other. The air in the tube is at 20 ∘C20\,^{\circ}\text{C}, for which the speed of sound may be taken to be 340 m s−1340\,\text{m\,s}^{-1}. End corrections are negligible. (1) Part 1: (a) Calculate the frequency of the fundamental resonance of the tube. Show all work and include appropriate units. (2) Part 2: (b) Determine the frequency of the third resonant mode of the tube. (3) Part 3: (c) The tube is now placed in front of a loudspeaker capable of producing pure tones of 200 Hz200\,\text{Hz}, 300 Hz300\,\text{Hz}, 400 Hz400\,\text{Hz}, and 500 Hz500\,\text{Hz}. Identify which of these frequencies will produce a strong resonance and justify your selections.
