Problem

A hypothetical isomerization reaction of an organic compound is represented by A(g) ⇌ B(g). The reaction has ΔH° = +63.5 kJ mol⁻¹ and ΔS° = +137 J mol⁻¹ K⁻¹, both assumed constant over the temperature range considered. The gas constant is R = 8.314 J mol⁻¹ K⁻¹. (a) Determine the temperature (in kelvins) at which the equilibrium constant K equals 1 for this reaction. (b) Using your answer from part (a) as a reference, calculate K at 310 K. (c) Explain whether the forward reaction is thermodynamically favored at 310 K and support your reasoning with the calculated value of K.
