Problem

An electron (charge −e-e) is moving with velocity v=3.0×106 m s−1\mathbf v = 3.0\times10^{6}\,\text{m}\,\text{s}^{-1} in the +x+x–direction while it passes through a region where a uniform magnetic field of magnitude 0.20 T0.20\,\text{T} points in the +y+y–direction. Neglect all forces other than the magnetic force. (a) Determine the magnitude of the magnetic force acting on the electron. (b) Indicate whether the magnetic force points toward +z+z or −z-z. (c) The magnetic field is now reversed so that it points in the −y-y–direction while the electron’s velocity is unchanged. State the new direction of the magnetic force and explain how you arrived at your answer.
