Problem

Consider two geometric progressions, each with first term 1. Progression A has common ratio 2. Progression B has common ratio 12\tfrac12. (i) For each progression, write down the first six partial sums S1,S2,…,S6S_1, S_2, \dots, S_6. (ii) Describe the behaviour of the sequence of partial sums in Progression A and compare it with that in Progression B. (iii) Explain, without using limits beyond Class 11 syllabus, why one of the two progressions has a partial-sum sequence that approaches a fixed number while the other does not.
