Problem

A 0.50 kg0.50\,\text{kg} air-track glider moves along a straight line. At t=0 st = 0\,\text{s} its linear momentum is 1.0 kg⋅m/s1.0\,\text{kg·m/s} in the +x+x direction. At t=4.0 st = 4.0\,\text{s} its momentum is 5.0 kg⋅m/s5.0\,\text{kg·m/s} in the +x+x direction. Assume the momentum changes at a constant rate during the interval. (1) Calculate the magnitude and direction of the net external force acting on the glider during the 4.0 s interval. (2) Determine the glider’s acceleration during this interval. (3) If the glider’s speed at t=0 st = 0\,\text{s} is 2.0 m/s2.0\,\text{m/s}, determine its speed at t=4.0 st = 4.0\,\text{s}. Show that your result is consistent with your answer to part (a).
