Problem

An organic compound that contains carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, and oxygen is analyzed by combustion in excess oxygen. In one experiment, 0.500 g of the compound yields the following products: • 0.853 g CO₂(g) • 0.393 g H₂O(g) • 0.223 g NO₂(g) A separate experiment determines the molar mass of the compound to be 206 g mol⁻¹ (to two significant figures). (a) Using the product masses, calculate the mass of C, the mass of H, and the mass of N that were present in the original 0.500 g sample. (b) Determine the empirical formula of the compound. (c) Use the empirical formula and the measured molar mass to determine the molecular formula of the compound. (d) Calculate the mass percent of nitrogen in the compound based on your molecular formula, and explain how this value could be used to check consistency with the analytical data.
