Problem

A person of mass 65 kg65\,\text{kg} stands on a spring balance placed inside a lift. (a) Calculate the reading of the balance when the lift is at rest. (b) The lift now moves vertically upward with a constant speed of 2.0 m s−12.0\,\text{m}\,\text{s}^{-1}. What will the balance read? (c) Next, the lift moves downward with a uniform acceleration of 1.5 m s−21.5\,\text{m}\,\text{s}^{-2}. Determine the balance reading. (d) Finally, the lift is descending but comes to rest uniformly, experiencing an upward acceleration of 2.0 m s−22.0\,\text{m}\,\text{s}^{-2}. Find the balance reading during this retardation.
