Problem

A block of mass 1.5 kg1.5\,\text{kg} is released from rest at the top of a rough incline of height 1.2 m1.2\,\text{m}. The incline makes an angle of 37∘37^{\circ} with the horizontal and has a coefficient of kinetic friction of 0.100.10. At the bottom of the incline the block moves along a smooth horizontal surface and strikes a light horizontal spring of force constant 600 N m−1600\,\text{N\,m}^{-1} fixed to a wall. After being compressed, the spring pushes the block back along the same path. Take g=9.8 m s−2g = 9.8\,\text{m\,s}^{-2} and assume the horizontal surface is frictionless. (i) Calculate the speed of the block just before it comes into contact with the spring. (ii) Determine the maximum compression of the spring. (iii) After leaving the spring, the block slides back up the same incline. Find the maximum distance, measured along the incline, that the block ascends before coming to rest.
