Problem

In a materials laboratory, engineers are testing two crystal samples for infrared optics: sapphire (n=1.77n=1.77) and fluorite (n=1.43n=1.43). A collimated infrared beam in air strikes each crystal at an incident angle of 50∘50^{\circ} relative to the normal. (a) Calculate the refracted angle inside the sapphire sample, expressed to the nearest tenth of a degree. (b) Calculate the refracted angle inside the fluorite sample, expressed to the nearest tenth of a degree. (c) For each crystal, compute the magnitude of the angular deviation, defined as the difference between the incident angle in air and the refracted angle inside the crystal. Then determine the percentage difference between the two deviation magnitudes, using the sapphire value as the reference (denominator).
