Problem

Unpolarized light of intensity I0I_0 is incident normally on a flat air-to-glass boundary. At this wavelength, 4.0 % of the incident intensity is reflected; the remainder enters the glass. An ideal linear polarizer can be placed either before or after the glass. (a) With no polarizer present, determine the intensity transmitted into the glass and the intensity reflected back into the air. (b) The polarizer is now placed immediately after the glass. Determine the intensity emerging from the polarizer. Explain your reasoning. (c) Instead, the polarizer is inserted in the incident beam before the light reaches the glass, with its transmission axis vertical. Compare qualitatively the reflected and transmitted intensities at the boundary with those found in part (a), and justify any differences you predict.
