Problem

Four pairs of transparent media are listed below: P: Flint glass (1.65) to air (1.00) Q: Quartz (1.46) to water (1.33) R: Benzene (1.50) to carbon tetrachloride (1.46) S: Crown glass (1.52) to glycerine (1.47) (The numbers in brackets are absolute refractive indices.) (a) Arrange the pairs P, Q, R and S in ascending order of their critical angles. (b) For pair Q, calculate the numerical value of the critical angle. (c) If a light beam in medium R is incident on the interface with carbon tetrachloride at 60∘60^{\circ} to the normal, state with reason whether refraction or total internal reflection will occur. (d) Explain why pair P is preferred over pair Q for constructing an optical device that relies on total internal reflection.
