Problem

A particle executes simple harmonic motion of amplitude AA along a straight line. (a) Draw qualitative graphs of kinetic energy, potential energy and total mechanical energy as functions of displacement xx. (b) Using the graphs, explain why the kinetic energy is zero at the extreme positions and maximum at the mean position. (c) From energy considerations, explain at which displacement(s) from the mean position the kinetic and potential energies are equal. Express your answer in terms of AA.
