Problem
A student investigates a frictionless horizontal mass–spring system that oscillates with fixed total mechanical energy. The mass is released from rest at its maximum positive displacement, then allowed to oscillate freely.
(a) Describe how the kinetic energy of the mass varies as it moves from equilibrium to its maximum negative displacement. Your answer should refer to the relative magnitudes of kinetic and potential energies at the endpoints and at the midpoint of this interval.
(b) At an instant when the mass is one-half of its maximum distance from equilibrium, compare the kinetic energy to the potential energy. Explain your reasoning.
(c) Suppose an identical system is prepared, but its total mechanical energy is suddenly quadrupled while the mass and spring constant remain unchanged. Explain qualitatively how the amplitude of oscillation in the new system compares with the amplitude in the original system.
