Problem

An electron enters a region of uniform magnetic field of magnitude 0.50 T0.50\,\text{T}. The initial speed of the electron is 2.0×106 m s−12.0\times10^{6}\,\text{m s}^{-1} and the velocity vector makes an angle of 30∘30^{\circ} with the magnetic field. (i) Calculate the magnitude of the magnetic force acting on the electron at the instant it enters the field. Take e=1.6×10−19 Ce = 1.6\times10^{-19}\,\text{C}. (ii) Determine the magnitude of the initial acceleration produced by this force. Use the electron mass me=9.1×10−31 kgm_{e}=9.1\times10^{-31}\,\text{kg}. (iii) Using the appropriate right-hand rule, state the direction of the magnetic force with respect to v\mathbf{v} and B\mathbf{B}. (No diagram is required.)
