Problem

A ball of mass 0.50 kg0.50\,\text{kg} is projected vertically upward from ground level with a speed of 20 m s−120\,\text{m s}^{-1}. Take g=9.8 m s−2g = 9.8\,\text{m s}^{-2} and the zero of potential energy at ground level. (i) Calculate the total mechanical energy of the ball at the instant of projection. (ii) Determine the maximum height reached by the ball. (iii) Find the speed of the ball when it is at a height of 10 m10\,\text{m} above the ground. (iv) Using your answers, verify whether the mechanical energy of the ball is conserved during its flight (neglect air resistance).
