Problem

A student claims that annihilating 1.0 g1.0\,\text{g} of matter would meet a city’s entire electricity requirement for one day, estimated to be 1.0×1010 kWh1.0\times10^{10}\,\text{kWh}. (i) Estimate, to the nearest order of magnitude, the energy released if 1.0 g1.0\,\text{g} of matter were converted completely into energy. (ii) Convert the city’s daily electricity requirement into joules. (iii) Compare the two energy values obtained above and discuss whether the student’s claim is justified, giving reasons for your answer.
