Problem

Let cc be a fixed real number. Define S=∑i=1p ∑k=1qc,S = \sum_{i=1}^{p}\,\sum_{k=1}^{q} c, where pp and qq are positive integers. (i) Evaluate the inner sum ∑k=1qc\displaystyle \sum_{k=1}^{q} c. (ii) Using the result of part (i), show that S=p q c\displaystyle S = p\,q\,c. (iii) Find the numerical value of SS when p=8p=8, q=15q=15 and c=−3c=-3. (iv) Generalise your result to the triple sum ∑j=1r ∑i=1p ∑k=1qc\displaystyle \sum_{j=1}^{r}\,\sum_{i=1}^{p}\,\sum_{k=1}^{q} c and state the simplified expression in terms of pp, qq, rr and cc.
