Problem

A collection of hydrogen atoms is excited so that electrons are raised to the stationary state with principal quantum number n=6n=6 and then allowed to return to lower levels. (a) Calculate the total number of distinct emission lines that can appear in the Balmer series during the de-excitation of this ensemble. (b) Find the wavelengths of the longest and the shortest Balmer lines that can be produced under these conditions. (c) Show that both wavelengths obtained in part (b) lie within the visible region of the electromagnetic spectrum.
