Problem

Use the data in the table below to answer the questions which follow. | Element | ArA_r | |---|---| | H | 1 | | C | 12 | | N | 14 | | O | 16 | | Na | 23 | | Mg | 24 | | Si | 28 | | S | 32 | | Cl | 35.5 | | Fe | 56 | 0.048 g of magnesium was reacted with excess dilute hydrochloric acid at room temperature and pressure. The hydrogen gas given off was collected. (1) Write a word and balanced symbol equation for the reaction taking place. (2) Draw a diagram of an apparatus which could be used to carry out this experiment and collect the hydrogen gas. (3) How many moles of magnesium were used? (4) Using the equation you have written in your answer to (a), calculate the number of moles of hydrogen and hence the volume of this gas produced. (5) Calculate the volume of a solution containing 0.1 mol dm−30.1\text{ mol dm}^{-3} hydrochloric acid which would be needed to react exactly with 0.048 g of magnesium.
