Problem

A bullet of mass 25 g25\,\text{g} travelling at 300 m s−1300\,\text{m\,s}^{-1} embeds itself in a stationary wooden block of mass 2.0 kg2.0\,\text{kg} resting on a horizontal surface with uniform coefficient of kinetic friction μk\mu_k. After the impact, the block together with the bullet slides 0.90 m0.90\,\text{m} before coming to rest. Take g=9.8 m s−2g = 9.8\,\text{m\,s}^{-2}. (i) Find the speed of the block–bullet system just after impact. (ii) Determine the coefficient of kinetic friction between the block and the surface.
