Problem
A slide and a screen are fixed 3.0 m apart on an optical bench. A convex lens of focal length 20 cm is to be inserted between them so that a sharp image of the slide is formed on the screen.
(a) If x is the distance of the lens from the slide, derive the quadratic equation that x must satisfy.
(b) Solve the equation to obtain the two possible positions of the lens.
(c) For each lens position, calculate the magnification produced.
(d) Which lens position will give the larger image on the screen? Justify your choice with calculations.
