Problem

A handheld magnifying glass has a single thin lens of focal length 8.0 cm. A student wants to use it to examine the fine print on a postage stamp such that the image of the print appears upright and three times larger than the actual print. (a) Determine the numerical distance between the stamp and the lens that will produce an upright image with a lateral magnification of +3. (b) Calculate the corresponding numerical location of the image relative to the lens, and state whether the image is real or virtual. (c) If the student moves the stamp 1.0 cm closer to the lens from the position found in part (a), describe qualitatively how the size and nature (real or virtual) of the image will change. Provide reasoning to support your answer.
