Problem

A 0.50 kg0.50\,\text{kg} block attached to a spring performs simple harmonic motion with angular frequency 4.0 rad s−14.0\,\text{rad}\,\text{s}^{-1}. Its speed is 0.30 m s−10.30\,\text{m}\,\text{s}^{-1} when the block is 0.06 m0.06\,\text{m} away from the equilibrium position and is moving towards the mean position. (i) Calculate the magnitude of the speed of the block when it is 0.08 m0.08\,\text{m} away from the equilibrium position. (ii) State whether the block is moving towards or away from the mean position at this instant.
