Problem

A particle of mass 1.5 kg1.5\,\text{kg} moves along a straight line with an initial velocity of 4 m s−14\,\text{m}\,\text{s}^{-1}. During the interval 0≤t≤2 s0\le t\le2\,\text{s} it is subjected to a variable force given by F(t)=6t2 NF(t)=6t^{2}\,\text{N}; after t=2 st=2\,\text{s} no external force acts on the particle. (i) Derive an expression for the particle’s momentum as a function of time in the range 0≤t≤2 s0\le t\le2\,\text{s}. (ii) Find the instant within this interval at which the momentum of the particle becomes exactly twice its initial value. (iii) Calculate the displacement of the particle during the time interval 2 s≤t≤5 s2\,\text{s}\le t\le5\,\text{s}.
