Problem

Consider an arithmetic progression with first term aa and common difference dd. (i) Explain why the sum of the terms from the pp-th to the qq-th term (inclusive), where q>p≥1q>p\ge 1, can be written as Sq−Sp−1S_q-S_{p-1}, where SnS_n denotes the sum of the first nn terms of the progression. (ii) Using the result of part (i), obtain a simplified expression, in terms of aa, dd, pp and qq, for the sum Tp,q=ap+ap+1+⋯+aqT_{p,q}=a_p+a_{p+1}+\dots +a_q.
