Problem

(a) State the rule that gives the direction of the magnetic force acting on a moving positive charge placed in a magnetic field. (b) How does the direction of this force change if the charge is negative? (c) An electron enters a region where its velocity is along the +x–axis while the magnetic field is along the +z–axis. Predict, with proper reasoning, the initial direction of the magnetic force on the electron and sketch the qualitative path it will follow. (d) If the same electron were to enter the region with its velocity reversed (i.e. along the –x–axis) while the magnetic field remains unchanged, what would be the new direction of the magnetic force? Explain your answer clearly.
