Problem

Two friends plan a trek. Their home H is first chosen as the origin. The trek proceeds in two legs on level ground: Leg 1: From home H they walk 1.2 km1.2\,\text{km} due north to point A. Leg 2: From A they walk 1.6 km1.6\,\text{km} due east to reach the camping site C. After setting up camp, they decide to treat the camping site C as the new origin for describing the entire journey. Taking east as the +x+x-direction and north as the +y+y-direction, answer the following: (i) With respect to the original origin H, write the xx- and yy-coordinates of point A and point C. (ii) Compute the magnitude of the net displacement from H to C. (iii) Determine the xx- and yy-coordinates of the starting point H when measured from the new origin C. (iv) Using the coordinates obtained in part (iii), calculate the magnitude of the displacement from H to C once again and hence prove that changing the origin does not alter the displacement between two fixed points.
