Problem

A cricket ball of mass 0.15 kg0.15\,\text{kg} is bowled horizontally towards the east with a speed of 20 m s−120\,\text{m\,s}^{-1}. The batsman plays a square-cut so that the ball leaves his bat travelling due north at 16 m s−116\,\text{m\,s}^{-1}. The bat is in contact with the ball for 0.012 s0.012\,\text{s}. (i) Resolve the initial and final velocity vectors of the ball into mutually perpendicular east (+x+x) and north (+y+y) components. (ii) Hence compute the xx- and yy-components of the change in momentum of the ball. Also find the magnitude and direction (with respect to the eastward axis) of this change. (iii) Calculate the magnitude of the average force exerted by the bat on the ball during the impact.
