Problem

A particle is subjected simultaneously to two coplanar forces. The first force has magnitude 20 N20\,\text{N} and acts at 45∘45^{\circ} above the positive x-axis. The second force F2\mathbf{F}_2 is unknown. The resultant of the two forces is 50 N50\,\text{N} acting exactly along the positive y-axis. (i) Draw a rough diagram showing the directions of the three forces acting on the particle. (ii) Resolve the known force into its rectangular components. (iii) Using the condition on the resultant, determine the rectangular components, magnitude, and direction of the unknown force F2\mathbf{F}_2. (iv) Show, by constructing the vector triangle of the three forces, that the triangle law of forces is satisfied.
