Problem

(Horizontal spring, numerical initial data) (a) A block of mass 0.50 kg0.50\,\text{kg} is attached to a horizontal light spring of force constant 8 N m−18\,\text{N\,m}^{-1}. It is displaced 0.10 m0.10\,\text{m} to the right of equilibrium and given an initial velocity of −0.20 m s−1-0.20\,\text{m\,s}^{-1} at t=0t=0. Calculate the angular frequency of oscillation. (b) Using the data in part (a), determine the amplitude of the ensuing simple harmonic motion. (c) Find the phase constant (in radian) that describes this motion, choosing the usual cosine form for displacement. (d) Compute the total mechanical energy of the system and the maximum speed attained by the block during its oscillation.
