Problem

A vertical spring is fixed to a rigid support. When a block of mass 1.20 kg1.20\,\text{kg} is gently hung from the spring, the spring stretches by 4.0 cm4.0\,\text{cm} to reach its new equilibrium position. The block is then pulled downward by an additional 2.0 cm2.0\,\text{cm} and released from rest so that it performs small-amplitude oscillations about the equilibrium position. (a) Determine the force constant of the spring from the information on static extension. (b) Calculate the time period of the ensuing oscillations. (c) How many complete oscillations will the block execute in 1.5 min1.5\,\text{min}?
