Problem

In a laboratory experiment, a student connects a microphone to a cathode-ray oscilloscope (CRO) to study the sound produced by a tuning fork. The time-base control of the CRO is adjusted so that the trace shows 66 complete wave cycles occupying 0.012 s0.012\,\text{s} along the horizontal time axis. Using this observation, answer the following questions: (a) Find the time period of the sound wave produced by the tuning fork. (b) Calculate its frequency. (c) If the speed of sound in air is taken as 340 m s−1340\,\text{m}\,\text{s}^{-1}, determine the wavelength of the sound wave. (d) A second tuning fork produces a sound of frequency 256 Hz256\,\text{Hz}. Which tuning fork produces the sound of higher pitch? Support your answer with appropriate reasoning using the frequencies obtained.
