Problem

A mass m=0.40 kgm=0.40\,\text{kg} is attached to a vertical spring of force constant k=64 N m−1k=64\,\text{N\,m}^{-1}. The mass is set into small–amplitude vertical simple harmonic motion of amplitude 8.0 cm8.0\,\text{cm}. (i) Calculate the period of oscillation. (ii) Find the time interval between two successive upward crossings of a point that is 3.0 cm3.0\,\text{cm} below the equilibrium position. (iii) Compare the interval obtained in part (ii) with the interval between two successive downward crossings of the same point and give a reason for any equality or inequality observed.
