Problem

Let two non-parallel vectors A\mathbf{A} and B\mathbf{B} have magnitudes AA and BB, respectively, with the angle between them being θ\theta (where 0<θ<π0<\theta<\pi). (a) Write an expression for the vector sum R=A+B\mathbf{R}=\mathbf{A}+\mathbf{B} in terms of AA, BB, and θ\theta. (b) Derive an expression for the magnitude R=∣R∣R=|\mathbf{R}|. (c) Hence obtain a simplified symbolic expression for the unit vector r^\hat{r} along R\mathbf{R} in terms of AA, BB, θ\theta, and the unit vectors along A\mathbf{A} and B\mathbf{B}. (d) Show that when A=BA=B, the direction of r^\hat{r} bisects the angle between A\mathbf{A} and B\mathbf{B}.
