Problem

Two identical plane mirrors M1M_1 and M2M_2 are fixed at right angles to each other at the corner of a room. A student stands so that her face is equidistant from both mirrors and raises her right hand. (i) Describe the orientation of the primary image formed in M1M_1 with respect to the student. (ii) A secondary image is produced by successive reflections first from M1M_1 and then from M2M_2. Will this secondary image be laterally inverted relative to the student? Give a reason based on the number of reflections involved. (iii) Generalise your observation by stating whether an odd or even number of reflections in plane mirrors produce lateral inversion. Support your answer with a brief explanation.
