Problem

The sums of the first nn terms of an A.P. and a G.P. are equal. The A.P. has first term 55 and common difference 33. The G.P. has first term 55 and positive common ratio rr, where r≠1r \neq 1. (i) Obtain the equation involving nn and rr that follows from the equality of the two sums. (ii) Given further that rr satisfies r2+r−2=0r^2 + r - 2 = 0, determine the admissible value of rr. (iii) For the value of rr found in part (ii), calculate the corresponding positive integer nn.
