Problem

Let the sums of the first pp and first qq terms of an arithmetic progression be equal, where p<qp < q. (i) Establish the relationship between pp, qq and the common difference dd that is implied by the condition Sp=SqS_p = S_q. (ii) Prove that the sum of the next (q−p)(q - p) terms is zero. (iii) If p=5p = 5 and q=8q = 8, find the first term of the AP in terms of dd, and hence obtain its numerical value when d=3d = 3.
